Mount Meru is a dormant stratovolcano located within Arusha National Park in northern Tanzania. It formed roughly 500,000 years ago and was once taller than Mount Kilimanjaro. A powerful volcanic eruption over 7,800 years ago destroyed much of the eastern side of the mountain, leaving behind the steep, horseshoe-shaped crater that defines its current appearance. Though its last minor eruption occurred in the early 20th century, Mount Meru is still considered potentially active, with its fertile slopes supporting a rich variety of flora and fauna.
